Formula

Notional = Lots × Contract size × Price · Margin = Notional / Leverage

How to read the result

  • —Broker leverage caps position size; effective leverage (notional / equity) is what actually describes your risk.
  • —Free margin shrinks as floating losses grow — that is how margin calls happen with a stop still far away.

Frequently asked questions

Does high leverage mean high risk?

Available leverage does not create risk by itself; position size and stop distance do. High leverage only becomes dangerous because it permits a position size your stop cannot survive.
