Formula

Lots = (Balance × Risk%) / (Stop in pips × Pip value per lot)

How to read the result

  • —The risk amount is what you lose if the stop is hit exactly — slippage and spread can make it slightly worse.
  • —Most brokers allow 0.01 lot steps; the calculator also shows the rounded, tradeable size.
  • —Standard pip value per 1.00 lot is 10 units of quote currency for most FX pairs; adjust it for gold, indices or JPY pairs.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I risk per trade?

Most professional risk frameworks stay between 0.25% and 1% of equity per trade. Above 2% a normal losing streak of eight trades already produces a drawdown that is psychologically hard to trade out of.

Why does my broker show a different lot size?

Contract sizes differ per instrument and per broker. Gold is often 100 ounces per lot, indices are quoted in points rather than pips. Always cross-check the pip value field with your broker's specification sheet.
