R = |Target − Entry| / |Entry − Stop| · Breakeven win rate = 1 / (1 + R)

How to read the result

  • —An R of 2 needs only 33.3% winners to break even before costs; an R of 0.5 needs 66.7%.
  • —Spread, commission and swap raise the required win rate — treat the breakeven number as a floor, not a target.

Frequently asked questions

Is a higher R always better?

No. Stretching targets raises R but lowers hit rate, and beyond a point the expectancy falls. Measure both numbers together in your journal instead of optimising one in isolation.
