SMC concepts like order blocks and liquidity sweeps work far better when applied during periods of genuine institutional participation. Killzones are the time windows traders use to filter for exactly that kind of activity.
The Main Forex Killzones
- ▸Asian session: lower volatility, often forms the range that London later breaks.
- ▸London open killzone: roughly 07:00-10:00 London time, typically the first major volatility expansion of the day.
- ▸New York open killzone: roughly 12:00-15:00 London time, overlapping with London and usually the highest-volume window of the day.
- ▸London close: the final hours of the London session, sometimes producing a reversal of the day's earlier move.
Why Timing Matters for SMC
A liquidity sweep or a structural shift that occurs during low-volume Asian hours carries far less weight than the same pattern occurring during the London or New York killzone, simply because fewer real institutional participants are active overnight.
A Typical Killzone Workflow
- 1.Mark the Asian session high and low as a reference range.
- 2.Watch for a liquidity sweep of that range as London opens.
- 3.Look for a structural shift and an order block forming shortly after the sweep.
- 4.Enter on a retracement into that order block, ideally before or during the New York overlap for extra volume.
Killzone times are usually quoted in London time (GMT/BST). Always convert to your own local time zone and account for daylight saving changes, which shift the overlap windows twice a year.
Avoiding Low-Quality Hours
Volume tends to thin out in the final hours of the New York session and especially into Friday's close. Setups formed here are statistically less reliable, even if they look technically clean.
Killzones Are a Filter, Not a Guarantee
Trading exclusively during killzones does not guarantee winning trades — it simply increases the odds that the price action you are analyzing reflects real institutional participation rather than thin, erratic movement. Combine session timing with structure, liquidity, and order block analysis for a complete approach.
CURIO's charting tools can automatically shade killzone windows on your chart in your local time zone, so you never need to manually convert session times.
