Before you can trade order blocks, liquidity, or fair value gaps, you need a map of where price actually is in the bigger picture. That map is market structure — the sequence of swing highs and lows that tells you whether the market is trending, ranging, or reversing.
Swing Highs and Swing Lows
A swing high forms when a candle's high is surrounded by lower highs on both sides. A swing low forms when a candle's low is surrounded by higher lows on both sides. These points are the raw building blocks of structure — everything else in SMC is built on top of them.
Uptrend, Downtrend, and Range
- ▸Uptrend: a sequence of higher highs (HH) and higher lows (HL).
- ▸Downtrend: a sequence of lower highs (LH) and lower lows (LL).
- ▸Range: highs and lows stop making new extremes and oscillate between two levels.
Internal Structure vs. External Structure
External structure refers to the major swing points that define the overall trend on your chosen timeframe. Internal structure refers to the smaller swings that form inside a single leg of the external structure — visible when you zoom into a lower timeframe.
Traders often use internal structure to time entries: the external structure gives the directional bias (long-term view), while internal structure gives the trigger (short-term shift that confirms the move is starting).
A common approach: read external structure on H4 or D1 for bias, then drop to M15 or M5 to find internal structure shifts that align with that bias for entries.
Structural Shifts and Trend Changes
A trend does not end silently. It ends when price fails to make a new extreme and then breaks the opposite swing point — this is the first sign that the balance of buyers and sellers has shifted. Recognizing this moment early is one of the most valuable skills in SMC trading.
Practical Steps to Map Structure
- 1.Identify all major swing highs and lows on your chosen timeframe.
- 2.Label the sequence: is it HH/HL, LH/LL, or neither (range)?
- 3.Zoom into the latest leg and check internal structure for early clues of a shift.
- 4.Only trade in the direction of the higher-timeframe structure unless you have a clear reversal signal.
Two traders can draw slightly different swing points on the same chart. Structure is a framework, not an exact science — combine it with other confluences rather than trading it in isolation.
Why Structure Matters for Every SMC Concept
Order blocks, fair value gaps, and liquidity pools only make sense in the context of structure. A bullish order block in a confirmed downtrend has far lower odds than the same pattern appearing right after a bullish structural shift. Structure is the filter that everything else passes through.
CURIO's Pro charting tools can automatically label swing highs, swing lows, and structural shifts across multiple timeframes, so you spend less time drawing and more time deciding.
