Premium, Discount, and Equilibrium

Not all price levels are equal — some are expensive, some are cheap. Learn how premium and discount zones sharpen your SMC entries.

Buying at a good price and selling at a good price is the entire game of trading. Premium and discount zones give SMC traders a simple, objective way to define what a good price actually is within the current range, instead of guessing.

Defining the Dealing Range

Choose a recent, meaningful swing high and swing low — usually the two points that define the current leg of market structure. Draw a Fibonacci retracement (or simply a range) between them. This range becomes the dealing range for your analysis.

Premium, Discount, and Equilibrium Explained

  • ▸Discount zone: the lower half of the range (below the 50% level) — considered a relatively cheap area to buy.
  • ▸Premium zone: the upper half of the range (above the 50% level) — considered a relatively expensive area to sell.
  • ▸Equilibrium: the exact 50% midpoint, where neither buyers nor sellers have a clear pricing advantage.
A simple rule of thumb

In an uptrend, look for long entries in the discount zone. In a downtrend, look for short entries in the premium zone. Trading against this rule means paying a worse average price.

Combining Premium/Discount with Other Concepts

Premium and discount zones are rarely used alone. Their real power comes from confluence: an order block sitting in the discount zone of an uptrend's dealing range is a far stronger long setup than the same order block sitting in the premium zone.

Practical Workflow

  1. 1.Identify the current directional bias using market structure.
  2. 2.Draw the dealing range between the most recent significant swing high and low.
  3. 3.Mark the 50% equilibrium level.
  4. 4.Only look for entries aligned with the bias, on the correct side of equilibrium.
Equilibrium is not a hard wall

Price frequently trades through equilibrium without reacting. Treat the 50% level as a filter for entry quality, not as a guaranteed reaction point on its own.

Redefining the Range as Price Moves

The dealing range is not fixed forever. As new swing highs and lows form, redraw the range using the most recent relevant swing points. An outdated range based on old structure will give misleading premium and discount readings.
