Volume Analysis Basics

Volume shows the conviction behind a price move — learn to read it to confirm trends and spot reversals.

Price tells you what happened; volume tells you how much conviction was behind it. A price move on high volume reflects broad participation and is more likely to continue or matter, while the same move on thin volume may simply be noise.

Volume in Forex vs. Exchange-Traded Markets

Forex is a decentralized, over-the-counter market, so there is no single, official volume figure. Most retail platforms instead display tick volume — the number of price changes in a period — as an approximation of actual activity. It correlates reasonably well with real volume but is not identical to it.

Volume Confirming Trends

  • ▸A healthy uptrend typically shows higher volume on up-moves and lower volume on pullbacks.
  • ▸A healthy downtrend shows higher volume on down-moves and lower volume on corrective bounces.
  • ▸When volume shrinks as a trend continues, it can warn that the move is losing underlying support.

Volume at Breakouts

A breakout from a range or chart pattern is far more credible when it happens on a surge in volume — it suggests real buying or selling pressure rather than a handful of orders pushing price through a thin level. Breakouts on low volume fail more often.

Volume Climax and Exhaustion

An extreme spike in volume after a sustained move, especially with a long wick or reversal candle, can mark a climax — the point where the last buyers or sellers pile in and there is no one left to push price further. This often precedes a reversal or at least a pause.

Volume divergence

If price makes a new high but volume on that high is noticeably lower than on the prior high, it suggests fewer participants are driving the move — a form of divergence that can precede a reversal.

Practical Guidelines

  1. 1.Use volume as confirmation, not as a standalone signal — combine it with price structure.
  2. 2.Compare current volume to a recent average, not to an absolute number, since typical volume varies by instrument and time of day.
  3. 3.Pay closer attention to volume around key levels, breakouts, and reversal candles than during quiet, directionless periods.
