Trading Sessions & Market Hours

Not all hours are equal. Liquidity and volatility peak when two sessions overlap — here's when to trade.

The forex week runs 24 hours a day, Monday to Friday. But liquidity and volatility aren't constant — they spike during session overlaps and fade during the quiet hours. Knowing when to trade is as important as knowing what to trade.

The Four Sessions (UTC, approximate)

SessionOpen (UTC)Close (UTC)Character
Sydney21:0006:00Quiet, low vol
Tokyo00:0009:00JPY pairs active
London07:0016:00Highest volume, major moves
New York12:0021:00USD pairs active, news-heavy

The Golden Overlaps

The best trading happens when two sessions overlap — two financial centers trading simultaneously means double the participants and much higher volatility.

OverlapTime (UTC)Best for
Tokyo–London07:00–09:00JPY & GBP volatility
London–New York12:00–16:00EUR/USD, GBP/USD — peak liquidity
Trade the London–NY overlap

12:00–16:00 UTC is when the most money is moving. This is when EUR/USD, GBP/USD, and USD/JPY have the tightest spreads and cleanest moves. If you can only trade a few hours a day, this is the window.

When NOT to Trade

  • ▸Friday afternoon (NY close) — liquidity dries up, weekend gaps can gap your stops.
  • ▸Sunday open — spreads are huge, first hour is erratic.
  • ▸Major news minutes (NFP, CPI, FOMC) — unless you have a specific news strategy.
  • ▸Holiday sessions — skeleton liquidity, unpredictable spikes.
